  • KOREAN DRAMA
Korean drama refers to televised dramas, similar to Western miniseries, produced in the Korean language for Korean audiences. Many of these dramas have become popular throughout Asia and have contributed to the general phenomenon of the Korean wave. Most popular Korean dramas have also become popular throughout East and Southeast Asia. Some of the most internationally popular Korean dramas are Full House, Stairway to Heaven, My Girl, Dae Jang Geum, The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince, Autumn in My Heart and Princess Hours. Recently some Korean Dramas have become quite popular in Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Mexico, Chile and Brazil.

These shows typically involve conflicts such as marital relationships, money bargaining, relationships between in-laws (usually between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law), and often, complicated love triangles.

Korean dramas have recently become popular in the United States, particularly among Asian Americans and older viewers, as many of them see these dramas as an alternative to the violent and racy content of American soap operas. Korean drama fan clubs have appeared in Hawaii and California. Cable channels in the U.S. (such as AZN, KBS World) feature several Korean dramas during primetime. The dramas are not dubbed, but subtitled in English. Aside from the soaps, AZN also has a program called Drama City, telecasted on Sunday nights on KBS in the U.S. This program includes a variety of tele-serials; each serial with a new story.

    TAIWANESE DRAMA

Taiwanese dramas typically focus more on romance than Western television dramas. Crime dramas, police dramas, lawyer dramas, and doctor dramas are less common in Taiwan than romantic dramas. Taiwanese dramas tend to have less violence and sexual content than many American soap operas and primetime dramas.

Typical subjects can include first teenage experiences with dating. Characters often have some dark secret or painful past that makes it difficult for them to form lasting relationships, and the drama may show characters finding a way to work through their deep personal problems. Love triangles are a common feature.

Taiwanese dramas share many similarities in genre with both Japanese dramas and Korean dramas, although they differ considerably in subject matter with Chinese dramas. For example, dramas based on nationalist sentiment and politics are much less common.

Many popular Taiwanese dramas are based off of Japanese manga, shoujo manga in particular although some seinen manga have been made into dramas as well. Some examples include Meteor Garden (based on Hana Yori Dango), It Started With a Kiss (based on Itazura na Kiss), Marmalade Boy, and Peach Girl. In these adaptations, the characters’ names are read as Chinese or are changed to more Chinese-sounding names, and of course, the setting is moved to Taiwan.

    JAPANESE DRAMA
japanese Dramas are a staple of Japanese television and are broadcast daily. All major TV networks in Japan produce a variety of dramas including romance, comedies, detective stories, horror, and many others.

Japanese dramas are broadcast in three-month long seasons, with new dramas airing each season. The majority of dramas are aired weekdays in the evenings around 9:00pm, 10:00pm, or even 11:00pm. Dramas shown in the morning or afternoon are generally broadcast on a daily basis, and episodes of the same drama can be aired every day for several months, such as NHK’s asadora, or morning dramas. The evening dramas, however, air weekly, and are usually 9 to 12 episodes long, though sometimes there will be an epilogue special made after the final episode if the drama has been a huge success.
Japanese television seasons are: Winter (January–March), Spring (April–June), Summer (July–September), and Autumn or Fall (October–December).

One characteristic of Japanese drama that differentiates it from others is that each episode is usually shot only a few (2–3) weeks before it is actually aired. Many fans have been able to visit their idols’ shooting scenes at the same time the show goes on air.
